Coilover adjustment

Little tutorial on how to adjust a coilover. These are my recently purchased Function/Form coilovers. I currently have Tein SS (Super Street) coilovers in my Accord but they were too pussy for me so I thought I’d make a change in the suspension. One thing I should note… That was a big mistake. The F2s I got were terrible and I ended up going back to my Teins.

hi, can you make a video on adjusting coilovers while they’re on your car ?

  • By W33ZY64, 14/03/2010 @ 6:19 pm

can you jack the car up and adjust them or do you have to take them off??

Function Form coilovers are cheap. People on Honda-Tech like them because they go low and are super inexpensive. I hated mine with a passion, and what I found later on is that the guys at F2 don’t really know their own product as much as they lead others to believe. They were poorly valved and that was the end of it. I would rate them as a 2. I’ve had my Teins for five years now. I took my F2s off after two months…

Salted roads are notorious for making coilovers rust and at that point they are basically impossible to adjust. Be weary of this. If you plan on using these during winter you should try and find some sort of anti-corrosion lubricant that would help protect the metal from rusting. Otherwise you will be stuck, or have a very difficult time adjusting the height.

The dampening adjustments don’t necessarily need to be changed, but I would recommend the stiffer settings.

    got it done.

yes, i do live in an area where they salt roads. but this is my first year having the teins.

if i plan on using these in the winter, should i grease up the threads for the seats?

does the damping force adjustment have to be changed if i lowered it?

    thanks for your help.

I don’t think so. I can still adjust mine and I’ve had them for four years now. It just depends on road surfaces I guess. Do you live in an area where they salt the roads?

  • By DaWangMaster, 14/03/2010 @ 7:58 pm

    i’ll try that then.

but do you think that the tension in the springs pushing against the top seat could possibly account for it not moving?

the bottom seat moves up and down with no problems at all. it can’t be seized and the threads are more than well lubricated

  • By sleepercell, 14/03/2010 @ 8:11 pm

No I don’t have to compress the spring while it’s on the car. If your seat isn’t moving you need to get some lubricant agent in there to try and loosen up the threads, that way you should be able to spin it freely. After that it’ll be easy to adjust your coilovers.

do you have to compress the spring if its on the car?

the top seat doesn’t turn when trying to move it down

    i have tein ss

They are valved more accurately for the spring rates that they are equiped with. My spring perches are all the way down in the back, and I actually removed one perch from each side in the front so they’re lower than advertised. I’m riding on full stiffness right now and it’s still very comfortable for daily driving. Taiwanese coilovers are crap and the materials used to make these are much higher than the shitty aluminum most companies use. I would suggest getting stiffer springs from Tein

I just picked up some tein ss’s for my 01 Acura Cl-S.

How are the teins better than the F2’s in your opinion, and do you ever bottom out when you have the spring perch really low on your teins? what front/rear damper settings are you using?

  • By sleepercell, 14/03/2010 @ 11:15 pm

It wasn’t permanently stuck, it just was twisted to full stiffness a little too far. I’m not sure if that’s the problem with yours though. Are you in an area where they salt the roads at all?

i notice the dampening adjustment was stuck at first, how did u get it to go again??mine is stuck but i couldnt figure it out how to make it go

I like you comments in the info… the teins were too pussy… “One thing I should note… That was a big mistake. The F2s I got were terrible and I ended up going back to my Teins.” Haha Tein FTW! Thanks for the video!

The fenders are right about where the top of the tires are.

  • By DoorOfPerceptions, 15/03/2010 @ 1:19 am

whats the lowest you can get on tein ss?

  • By sleepercell, 15/03/2010 @ 1:40 am

Yes, but it’s a little more difficult than when they are off the car. It depends on your strut type.

  • By paintball8439, 15/03/2010 @ 2:27 am

stupid question i know, but can you do all this while its installed on the car??

  • By jnhammond7, 15/03/2010 @ 3:21 am

Great work mate, nice easy tute for us suspension retards.

    Thanks

  • By sleepercell, 15/03/2010 @ 4:13 am

Two inches… It’s pretty self explanatory once you have a set in front you. Just watch my video after you get a set of coilovers and you’ll see.

  • By henry14000, 15/03/2010 @ 5:00 am

2 in drop? im still looking around for a good/cheap set, lol i have no idea how they work though

  • By sleepercell, 15/03/2010 @ 5:25 am

Yes you have to remove the wheel to access the lower mount and lock nuts. There is no measurement on the coilovers. Part of it is just knowing by eye or you could get scientific and just measure the amount of thread from the bottom of the spring seats to the top of the lower mount lock nut… But most people just count the number of threads in between them. How low are you wanting to go?
